I was going through my backlog of unread messages, and I found this link to PCWorld, about Norton AntiVirus and Internet Security 2009. What I’m confused about, is really tall claims, that both will install under 1 minute flat.
Yeah right…
They haven’t even mentioned if they’re installing it on a ClassmatePC, or a supercomputer. I know for a fact, that when I tried installing Norton AntiVirus 2005, ages ago, on my trusty single-core, it took ages, much more thant the 4-5 minutes specified for earlier versions of the software.
They also claim around 7MB of memory usage for both the applications, which I find hard to beliveve. Anyway, I’m not in a mood to try out Norton, cause it has messed up my PC earlier, and I’m not in any mood to let it run amok again.
And I don’t have any space left either…

Let me summarize before you begin. NAV is utter crap!
If that didn’t do the trick, let me elaborate. I know several people who have various versions of Norton Anti(?)-Virus installed on their PCs.
Poor souls…
The reason why I just can’t stand this ‘utility’ is because it’s like spyware. Let me elaborate further:
- It creates a number of services, most of them junk.
- It implants itself in system32 (the Windows system folder)
- It’s a bloody RAM pig!
- It’s inefficient when scanning.
- It can crash your PC while scanning.
- Microsucks Office and NAV have paired up and Office scans each and every document before opening.
- LiveUpdate sucks. The update sizes are huge.
- It’s in a garish shade of yellow!
- There are reports that it can install viruses itself, and then scan them out, to show that it’s doing some work.
- It bugs you to renew your subscription all the time.
But what I really can’t understand is why do most OEMs (read Original Equipment Manufacturers – those companies like Dell, HP and Pavna
) give out such crap pre-installed on their PCs? They can quite as easily give out free alternatives like avast! and AVG. Ditto for sensible component manufacturers like Asus. I got Norton Anti-virus 2005 with their motherboard.
It’s actually sickening to see this monopoly of flimsy software. Now I know how Ankur feels about M$ (read Microsucks read Microsoft)
So I suggest that you change to either avast! or AVG anti-virus. They are smaller, FREE and quicker.

Here we go again. The holiday season is all set to slam upon us, just the way malware will. Cummon, you have to be a serious noob if you haven’t noticed the pattern. Jingle bells…data insecure…PC crashed…bad Christmas. Quite evident.
There are quite a few ways to avoid this pain in the ass. I suggest a simple yet effective method – update your OS (only required if it’s Windows), browser and security software. That should work.
And if you’re a noob, who’s using Norton Anti-virus, go boil you head. You better shift to something more effective before it’s TOO LATE!!! I’m not joking. Head over to www.avast.comor www.avg.com. avast! and AVG are two very good free alternatives to pre-installed OEM anti-virus, which is only good at hogging memory (anyone at Norton reading this?) As for spyware and that lot of crap-code, AdAware 2007 and Spybot S&D. These are some things which should keep most troubles off you mind.
