I consider myself to be pretty experienced when it comes to things like this. Y’know…when stuff just gives up…it’s happened to most of the components of my PC…and some other electrical applicances as well. What I didn’t expect is that this rather understated piece of hardware also had life.
I still remember how it happened. It wasn’t as if it was completely unexpected. The battery life of the UPS had been steadily deteriorating over a period of some months. Towards the closing chapter of the battery, it lasted for a second or two, with the monitor on. But the way it finally died was spectacular. It happened at night. I was sleeping, the PC was (as usual) downloading. The power went off, the UPS switched to whatever remaining battery life it had, which promptly gave way, and the overload siren came on. And it was stuck. I pulled out the power cord, tried switching off the UPS, tried the circuit breaker, everything sort of taking out the battery myself, but the UPS continued to wail. To be honest, I was feeling pretty sad. It was something that was 100% reliable and had worked flawlessly for over 3 years.
By the time I got up in the morning, it was dead…
To be honest, this isn’t really fresh news…happened some time ago…but I still haven’t got the time to get it repaired. Have called up APC at their call centre…by the way, here’s the toll-free number – 1800-4254-877/272. I first had to register a complaint. Then I was told that an engineer would drop by my house to check up on my BackUPS 500. I knew that this was going to cost me dear…so I asked him if I could just have the address of the service centre, so that I could just drop it off myself at their place. But the jerk at the call centre refused to give me the number, and was insistent that someone come over to my house.
By now I was really wild, but I didn’t exactly let loose over the phone. I just asked for his supervisor in a very level voice. That generally more damage than just shouting at them. The supervisor then informed me that I just needed to register before I could get the address and that the house call was not compulsory. I then get a call 2-3 days later and the guy gives me the address, although I still wonder why he couldn’t just give it me when I first called. Must be some company mumbo-jumbo policy…
Anyway, I’ve lost the address now…:-P…and I’ve called them again. Luckily this time I did not have to go through the entire process of giving my address and phone number because they registered me the last time I called. I’ll be getting the address soon. Which I will try not to lose this time around. Plus, the battery costs something like 700, or was that 1700. I’m confused. Anyway, I’ll soon be replacing the battery and will let you know how much it cost…
